Safe Travel: How to Handle an Earthquake in Mexico

Mexico is no stranger to earthquakes, especially during September. Earthquake preparedness helps you protect your family during these times and requires both preparation and knowledge. 

Here’s a guide on how to prepare for an earthquake and what to do before, during, and after an earthquake to ensure your family’s safety.

Before an Earthquake

1. Create a Family Plan: Discuss and practice a family emergency plan. Designate safe meeting spots inside and outside your home, and ensure everyone knows what to do if separated.
2. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Stock up on essentials such as water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, a flashlight, batteries, and a battery-operated radio. Don’t forget important documents and medications.
3. Secure Your Home: Fasten heavy furniture to walls and secure loose items. Check for structural weaknesses and make necessary repairs to strengthen your home against seismic activity.
4. Educate Your Family: Teach everyone what to do in an earthquake, such as dropping to their hands and knees, covering their heads, and holding on until the shaking stops.

During an Earthquake

1. Drop, Cover, and Hold On: When you feel shaking, drop to your hands and knees to prevent being knocked over. Take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture or against an interior wall away from windows. Hold on until the shaking stops.
2. Stay Indoors: If you’re inside, stay put. Avoid running outside, as falling debris poses a significant risk. If you’re outside, move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.
3. Stay Calm and Stay Put: Panic can lead to accidents. Remain calm, and once the shaking subsides, check yourself and others for injuries. Be cautious of aftershocks, which can follow the main quake.

After an Earthquake

1. Check for Damage: Inspect your home for damage. If you suspect gas leaks, turn off the gas supply and ventilate the area. Avoid using open flames or electrical switches until there are no leaks.
2. Follow Official Updates: Listen to local authorities for updates and instructions. Avoid using the phone unless it's an emergency to keep lines open for rescue operations.
3. Assist Others: Help neighbors, especially those needing assistance like the elderly or disabled. Share resources and check on the well-being of your community.
